Can you put a .308 barrel on an M95?
On a Mauser Model 95 (7×57), yes, a gunsmith can do it, because the .308 uses the same size bolt face. On a Steyr M95 straight-pull, it’s not practical.

Don’t use test-firing to find out. If the brake loosens or shifts, shot or the wad can hit it. Take it off, clean it, and install it properly.
Very unlikely. Pushing the latch forward firmly is how it’s designed to work. A stiff release usually means something else is binding, and you can get it fixed.
Most of the stiffness is the bolt cocking the firing pin when you lift the handle. Clean and grease the cocking cam and the backs of the locking lugs, then keep shooting. It smooths out with use.
