Did forcing the cylinder release on my new S&W 327 damage it?

Reader question, asked November 2025

Short answer: Very unlikely. Pushing the latch forward firmly is how it’s designed to work. A stiff release usually means something else is binding, and you can get it fixed.

The details

  • A common cause on Smith & Wessons is the ejector rod backing out, which makes the cylinder hard to open. Check that the rod is snug.
  • A burr, a tight center pin, or fouling under the ejector star can also cause it.
  • On a new gun, send it back to S&W under warranty rather than adjusting it yourself.
  • Stop if you hear grinding or the cylinder won’t open at all. Don’t force it further.
