Reader question, asked May 2025
Short answer: Any 13-round Model 84 in good shape will carry fine. The later 84F and 84FS (Cheetah) are the easiest to live with: they have a frame-mounted safety-decocker, and parts are easier to find.
The details
- The 84 is a double-action/single-action pistol with a double-stack 13-round magazine. Pick the one that’s in the best mechanical condition.
- The F-series added the ambidextrous safety and decocker and an updated finish. The FS is the newest version.
- It weighs roughly 23 oz unloaded, which is heavier and thicker than most modern pocket .380s. Plan on a good belt and a quality IWB holster.
- Before you carry it, test 100+ rounds of your chosen hollow point and make sure it runs reliably, especially in an older pistol.
