What’s the difference between a cheap gun and an inexpensive gun?

Reader question, asked October 2026

Short answer: An inexpensive gun has a low price but still runs. A cheap gun cut corners on reliability, materials or support.

The details

  • Good inexpensive guns come from established makers. They have real warranties and plenty of magazines, holsters and parts available.
  • Cheap warning signs: soft cast parts, rough or sharp machining, flimsy magazines, poor reviews on reliability, and a maker that’s hard to reach.
  • Whatever you buy, put 200+ rounds through it, including your defensive ammo, before you trust it.
  • Spending a little more on a proven model usually costs less than replacing a gun that doesn’t work.
