I Loctited a muzzle brake onto my KSG over grease. Is it safe to shoot?

Reader question, asked July 2026

Short answer: Don’t use test-firing to find out. If the brake loosens or shifts, shot or the wad can hit it. Take it off, clean it, and install it properly.

The details

  • Medium-strength (blue) threadlocker lets go with heat. Warm the brake with a heat gun, then unscrew it with a proper wrench. Protect the finish.
  • Clean both threads with a degreaser such as acetone or brake cleaner until they’re completely dry.
  • Reinstall with fresh threadlocker and the torque the maker recommends.
  • If it still won’t budge, or doesn’t sit straight, have a gunsmith check that it’s aligned before you shoot.
